Fact 1: Portugal are the worlds leading cork producer. There are about 2.2 million hectares of cork forest worldwide, Portugal has 32% of it and produces 180,000 tons annually.
Fact 2: In 2008, Portugal became the first country to make it compulsory for people to have fingerprints on identity cards.
Fact 3: In 2012 the population in Portugal was 10.2 Million with the capital Lisbon having around 500,000.
Fact 4: Portugal is one of the world’s top surf spots. It has a coastline of 800 kilometers and it’s known to have 364 days of surf!
Fact 5: Portugal is home to the longest bridge in Europe, the Vasco de Gama bridge. It stretches over 17 kilometers (more than 10.5 miles)
Fact 6: In Portugal, it’s against the law to pee in the ocean.
Fact 7: The largest diamond in the world is the Portuguese Diamond. It is 127 carats. It is also considered the most valuable diamond in the world because it is so beautiful.
Fact 8: For every 1000 people in Portugal, tare in prison, the highest rate in western Europe.
Fact 9: In February 2004, a hospital in Lisbon asked a zoo to lend it X-ray equipment usually used on elephants to enable it to treat overweight patients.
Fact 10: In Portugal, December 2010 the world largest wave was surfed by Garrett McNamara. It was 30m/90ft high!
