Lagos – Experience Luxury in the Jewel of Portugal
The stunning and historically significant town of Lagos is one of the best places to visit on the Western Algarve. Steeped in more than 2000 years of history, yet packed full of cultural and cosmopolitan places of interest, Lagos truly has something for everyone, especially those looking to invest in luxury villas and properties in the Algarve.
Closely connected to seafaring, The luxury location of Lagos has played host to visitors from across the world over the last several centuries. The area was first inhabited by the Phoenicians and in the 15th century was the starting point for Henry the Navigator’s ‘Voyages of the Discoveries’ which opened up trade routes between Portugal and Africa.
Lagos old town is surrounded by 16th century walls dating from when the city was home to the Algarve’s governors. You can still visit the Ponta da Bandeira fort along with many other historical points of interest including the Arabic influenced Governors Castle, the pretty Praça Infante Dom Henrique square and the spectacular ‘golden church’ of St Anthony, which also incorporates a fascinating museum.
Lagos is packed to the brim with history, but it’s also a vibrant and modern town with a bustling and cosmopolitan atmosphere. In the evenings Praça de Gil Eanes square is the perfect place for a bit of people watching and you’ll often find free live entertainment here too.
A labyrinth of back streets make this town rich for exploration, but despite the criss-crossing cobbled lanes – provided you always head downhill towards the centre, it’s hard to get unintentionally lost! Off the main square you’ll discover a plethora of restaurants catering to all tastes and many bars and cafes stay open until the small hours. During summer evenings the town centre is alive with people of all ages so there’s never a dull moment!
Lagos is a well-visited tourist area so you will encounter touts from the town’s many bars offering a free drink if you visit, but as many establishments are tucked away in side streets, talking to a tout can be the best way to find lesser frequented places.
Take a short stroll along the Avenida dos Descobrimentos and you’ll be stepping smack bang into the 21st century at the chic and contemporary Lagos Marina. Tramp across the footbridge which stands over the Bensafrim river for some of the best views of Lagos town and the delightful boats below.
A stone’s throw from the marina is beautiful Meia Praia beach with its azure ocean and four kilometres of golden sandy beaches. You’ll also find plenty of beach bars, some of which stay open throughout the year.
You can shop till you drop in the Marina’s interesting mix of boutiques and independent stores, then settle down at one of several waterside bars and restaurants.
To the rear of the marina is Lagos train station which provides easy access to everything Portugal has to offer. A short journey will take you to the delightful towns of Portimao, Albufeira and Faro, or if you’re feeling particularly adventurous you can even travel as far as Lisbon.
